Focus Isn’t About Doing Less — It’s About Eliminating the Wrong Work
Most business owners think they have a time problem. They don’t. They have a focus problem. Step Three of The Ten-Step Turnaround exists because you can’t scale chaos. Here’s the insight most owners miss: A lack of focus creates complexity. Custom work. Exceptions. “One‑off” clients. Special favors.
Each one feels small. Together, they destroy:
- Margins
- Team clarity
- Owner bandwidth
That’s why Step 3 forces owners to define:
- Their mission (why they exist)
- Their niche (what they specialize in)
- Their menu (what they will and will not offer)
When thinking about the products and services you offer, ask the following questions:
- Are we Good at it?
- Do we Enjoy it?
- Does it Makes Money?
- Is it Scalable?
Note the acronym: GEMS.
If your products and services aren’t GEMS, remove them from your menu and focus on other GEMS. Businesses don’t need long complicated menus to grow. They need to focus on a few GEMS. If your offerings aren’t clear, your team will constantly come to you for answers — and you’ll feel “needed” while slowly becoming the bottleneck. Focus isn’t restrictive. It’s freeing. If your business feels complex, Step 3 is where leverage begins.
